Burns & Levinson's tax attorneys represent businesses and individuals on all federal, state, and local tax issues both nationally and internationally. We also represent clients in special areas of ERISA and entertainment law. Our clients include families, partnerships, corporations, estates and trusts, nonprofit organizations, and governmental entities.
Corporate clients engage our services to structure acquisitions and dispositions of their businesses and plan restructurings that are part of public offerings. We identify ways for our clients to reduce tax risks and costs of everyday operations, and often reduce other costs, by changing tax structures. We represent clients in structuring complex real estate ventures and transactions, including tax-free exchanges, installment sales, debt restructurings, and foreclosures. Our transactional practice includes the formation of partnerships as well as nonbusiness entities such as grantor retained interest trusts.
We view tax practice as an integral part of a more complex human and social environment. Together with Burns & Levinson's trusts and estates attorneys, we implement various sophisticated estate planning techniques for families and individuals who are concerned not only with a significant tax component, but also with property management and other special needs. We develop strategies to transmit wealth from one generation to another in a tax-efficient manner. We mitigate the tax consequences of catastrophic personal and family events.
Some of our clients are involved in international transactions, in Europe, the Pacific Rim, and the former communist and developing nations. We represent foreign individuals with residences and/or interests in the U. S. and abroad, U.S. citizens living abroad or having foreign interests, and foreign corporations.
Our attorneys involve tax professionals in business transactions in the early stages to ensure that potential pitfalls are dealt with before they become problems and that all available tax opportunities are explored. Our goal is to present the client with different options, taking into account tax liability, time, and risk. We keep abreast of the most recent tax law changes that impact clients' transactions and reporting, and whenever appropriate, we advise our clients and their accountants. We also represent the firm's clients before the Internal Revenue Service and state tax authorities in audits and other tax controversies.
In the area of ERISA law, we offer comprehensive services for employers in their compensation and employee benefits programs, including qualified pension and profit-sharing plans, and compliance services. We help employers develop health plans, group insurance plans, disability programs, cafeteria plans, deferred compensation plans, and other employee fringe benefit programs.
