Burns & Levinson proudly congratulates partner Merton E. Thompson for his recent achievement of becoming a Certified Information Privacy Professional in the field of Information Technology (CIPP/IT).

Through the International Association of Privacy Professionals, CIPP/IT is the first global privacy certification for IT practitioners. It assesses individuals' understanding of privacy and data protection practices in the development, engineering, deployment and auditing of IT products and services.

"Companies in Massachusetts and across the globe need assistance navigating and complying with complex data security and privacy laws," said Deborah J. Peckham, Co-Chair of Burns & Levinson's Intellectual Property practice. "Merton has the experience, and now the certification, to help manufacturers and service providers avoid mishaps that can all too often occur when Massachusetts consumer data privacy laws are not understood."

Mr. Thompson leads the Privacy and Data Security practice at Burns & Levinson, and concentrates his practice in litigation and counseling in the areas of patent, copyright and trademark law. His expertise also covers internet, computer, data security and privacy law including compliance issues and Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) claims.
