With a combination of in-house and outside legal experience, Dr. Shahid Hasan is well-poised to guide clients to balance the clients’ patenting strategies with their business objectives.

Shahid advises clients in developing IP strategies that meet the client’s business objectives. His practice focuses on biotechnology, more specifically on biologics, medicinal chemistry and medical devices. Shahid has prepared non-infringement, freedom-to-operate and patentability opinions, performed due diligence evaluation of third parties’ patent portfolio, worked with business development teams, and monitored and analyzed competitive intellectual property.

On biologics, he has broad experience on developing and implementing IP strategies related to patenting human or humanized antibodies (e.g., IGF-IR, CD33, DS6, Muc1/16, EphA2, CD38, etc.), or on developing and implementing IP strategies related to patenting oncology-based target molecules (e.g., methods and compositions for the treatment and diagnosis of cellular proliferative disorders using novel gene products, apoptosis, etc.).

On medicinal chemistry, he has broad experience on developing and implementing IP strategies related to patenting therapeutically useful small molecules (e.g., maytansinoids and derivatives, mutant Actinosynnema pretiosum strain with increased maytansinoid production, prodrugs and analogs of CC1065 (pyrroloindole moieties linked by amide bonds), benzodiazepine derivatives, taxanes and their derivatives), or on conjugation of small molecules with biologics (immunoconjugates) which utilizes linker-based technology (e.g., cleavable and non-cleavable, cross linkers, charged or hydrophilic linkers), processes of making such drugs or improvements thereto. On medicinal devices, Shahid has broad experience on developing and implementing IP strategies related to patenting diagnostic tools in which biological molecules are at core to the functionalities of such tools.

Clients value his hands-on experience developing and implementing patent strategies centering on antibody drug conjugation (ADC) technology and the combinatorial use of drugs to treat cancer and inflammatory diseases.
