Welcome to Legal Terrain

April 11, 2023

Welcome to Legal Terrain – a blog dedicated to information and legal matters related to the environment, energy, and land use law. This platform aims to shed light on pressing environmental law questions with a fresh perspective informed by our collective experience and advocacy. Current and prospective clients, fellow attorneys, and anyone interested in digging into the roots of environmental law – this blog is for you.

Legal Terrain is an outlet where the Burns & Levinson Environmental Group will provide a service to our clients and the legal community on emerging issues in environmental law. With the addition of five attorneys from Mackie Shea Durning in 2022, Burns & Levinson now has one of the largest environmental practices in the region with increased capacity, expertise, and superior client services.

Our full team consists of Partners David Rosenblatt, Sean Coffey, Peter Durning, Laura Mittelman, and John Shea, Senior Counsel Thomas Mackie, Of Counsel Gail Hire, and Associate Peter Vetere.

Our team represents businesses, individuals, and municipalities in all areas of environmental law. With extensive experience in the field – and particular expertise in Massachusetts – our specialties include drinking water and wastewater, wetlands, compliance and enforcement defense, zoning and land use, energy, hazardous materials, and solid waste. For PFAS-related matters, we have strong relationships with many water suppliers and brought a cost-recovery action on behalf of a municipal waters supplier to recover funds to treat PFAS-impacted water. On the issue of climate change and sea level rise, we offer expertise in wetlands and coastal zone development, and our attorneys are significant thought leaders in environmental justice and related permit requirements.

Regarding the changing environmental landscape ahead, we are well-equipped to face whatever challenge is thrown our clients’ way together. Our team has extensive knowledge to share, from negotiating agreements with the EPA and other state and local authorities to environmental risks in business transactions and real estate ventures.

We look forward to sharing the journey with you as we navigate the shifting Legal Terrain of environmental law.
