Child Custody Case

overview

Burns negotiated a highly charged custody agreement between two sets of grandparents after their grandson’s parents both died unexpectedly and tragically. The paternal grandmother had full custody of her grandson, who viewed her as his mother, but he also regularly spent time with his maternal grandparents.

However, after feeling pressured and frightened by his maternal grandfather, the grandson’s therapist urged him to have fewer visits with them. The maternal grandparents responded by filing for mandatory visitation rather than working together to determine a reasonable visitation schedule. Burns was hired by the paternal grandmother to find the best possible solution for their grandson’s well being. With skill and sensitivity, we reached a settlement agreement that included some unusual compromises that couldn’t necessarily be obtained in court.
