"My passion in practicing law is understanding my clients' business goals and helping them navigate the legal landscape to reach them."
A business-first lawyer with a finance background, Richard Coen has spent his 20+ years in the legal profession helping decision makers maximize profit and minimize risk. Often, business and legal considerations converge; Richard gets to know a client's business and overall industry so that his legal advice is tailored to his client's situation.
Richard's practice focuses on commercial real estate law, finance and public-private partnerships. His clients include real estate owners, lenders and developers in the acquisition, sale and leasing of all types of commercial properties. He regularly advises lenders in secured and unsecured lending transactions. Drawing on more than 20 years of experience and contacts in all aspects of real estate, Richard thrives in addressing complex legal and business issues and finding ways to help his clients set and reach their goals.
Richard also counsels clients in a wide variety of construction projects. A sampling of such projects includes: power projects – including gas-fired, wind energy, hydro-electric and heat co-generation plants; transportation – including inter-modal facilities and bicycle path projects; hazardous waste reclamation projects and telecommunications projects.
Richard has helped many public entities engaged in P3 projects in the design, construction, operation and maintenance of infrastructure, including water and wastewater treatment plants and other utilities. In these matters, Richard has addressed finance, labor, and municipal procurement legal issues. He has advised clients on risk allocation and contractual provisions bearing on liability. In these and related projects, Richard has helped clients manage risk through surety bonds, insurance and other forms of security.
He has represented buyers and sellers of environmentally-contaminated properties, helping parties work with regulatory agencies to maximize value and limit exposure to environmental liability. Richard has assisted businesses in resolving complex zoning and title issues, and has advised borrowers in obtaining all types of financing, including syndicated, interstate, secured and unsecured financing.
